Photography Ownership & Usage
A Q & A regarding my photography:Who owns the images after the shoot?
As the photographer, I retain full ownership of the photos and grant designers specific usage rights. At no extra cost, designers can feature the images in portfolios, on company websites, in presentations, and for general marketing purposes. They’re also permitted for design competitions and editorial submissions.
What happens if a publication wants to use the photos?
Reputable publications typically pay licensing fees for photography, just as they do for written content and printing. Well-known outlets like Architect’s Magazine, Architectural Record, and The New York Times follow this practice. Some book publishers, however, may try to obtain images for free—either by shifting the cost to architects or requesting photographers to waive fees. Since photography enhances their product’s value, publishers should expect to pay for usage.
Can contractors or manufacturers use the images?
If anyone beyond the original agreement—such as contractors or manufacturers—wants to use the photos, they must contact me directly to arrange proper licensing. Only the photographer has the authority to grant additional usage rights.
What is multi-party usage?
When multiple stakeholders—such as architects, contractors, and builders—share licensing rights to the same images, this is called multi-party usage. While this increases the overall licensing cost, each participant pays less than they would if commissioning photography separately.
Copyright Notice for this site
My photographs are protected by copyright. As the photographer, I retain ownership and license their use. Fees are based on how widely and frequently the images are used. For example, using photos for social media and website marketing differs from editorial features or award submissions. A small business showcasing work on Instagram and a company using images in a large ad campaign will have different licensing rates. Let’s find the right option for your needs.
